13 On-Field Cricket Injuries That'll Shake You Up

Sponsored By www.Apnafoodtv.com

Phil Hughes got hit on the head by a bouncer, and is in critical condition. Let's take a look at 16 of the most awful on-field cricket injuries.

1. Brian Lara (West Indies)

In the 2004 Champions Trophy semifinal, Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar's bouncer felled the great West Indies batsman Brian Lara.

2. Gary Kirsten (South Africa)

Gary Kirsten was well-set and batting on 55. He attempted to hook Shoaib Akhtar but missed it. The ball smashed Kirsten's cheek.

3. Ricky Ponting (Australia)

Ricky Ponting was one of the world's best backfoot players. There are not many occasions where fast bowlers bounced him out. In the 2005 Ashes, Steve Harmison beat Ponting for pace as the Australian captain missed the hook shot. The ball thudded on to Ponting's helmet and there was a cut on his face.

4. Steve Waugh & Jason Gillespie (Australia)

This was one of the worst accidents on the cricket field. In the 1999 Galle Test, Mahela Jayawardene top-edged Collin Miller and the ball was in the air. Steve Waugh from short fine-leg and Jason Gillespie from deep square-leg ran towards the ball. The fall fell in between the two but Waugh and Gillespie collided which resulted in the former breaking his nose and the latter breaking his leg.

5. David Lawrence (England)

In the 1992 Wellington Test, Lawrence's patella bone shattered in the middle of his delivery stride. The injury literally ended his career and he had to retire at 29.

6. Mark Boucher (South Africa)

Mark Boucher didn't put on his helmet while keeping to leg-spinner Imran Tahir. When Tahir dismissed one of the batsmen bowled, the ball hit Boucher's left eye. The retina was damaged which ended Boucher's promising 15-year international career.

7. Simon Jones

The knee injury ended Simon Jones' career.

8. Keegan Meth (Zimbabwe)

Zimbabwe bowler Keegan Meth suffered a laceration to the lower lip and lost four upper teeth as he couldn't find time to react as Bangaldesh batsman Nasir Hossain hit a ball straight back at the bowler.

9. Alex Tudor (England)

Brett Lee was bowling a barrage of bouncers to Alex Tudor on the world's fastest pitch at WACA, Perth. Tudor misjudged one of the bouncers from Lee and it hit him on the head. Tudor collapsed on the ground and was carried off on a stretcher.

10. Rilee Rossouw (Bushnahira Cricket Dundee)

In the Sri Lankan Premier League, South African batsman Rilee Rossouw was hit by Lasith Malinga's bouncer. Rossouw collapsed on the ground with his face covered in blood.

11. Brendon McCullum (Brisbane Heats)

Sydney Thunders' bowler Brett Lee bowled a ferocious bouncer to Brendon McCullum who missed the ball and had to pay the price. There was blood splattered all around as McCullum had to retire hurt.

12. Justin Langer (Australia)

This was Justin Langer's 100th Test match but the match turned out to be a short affair for him when he was injured on the first ball of the innings by Makhaya Ntini. Langer was shaken by the Ntini' bouncer and played no further part in the Test.

13. Justin Vaughan (South Australia)

In the 2001 Pura Cup match, Justin Vaughan received an absolutely unplayable ball from David Saker. The ball which was relatively bowled at a fuller length jumped and hit Vaughan on the face.
